A Dream Come
True
Kansas City philanthropist Marjorie Powell Allen wanted to
provide outdoor programs for children. In 1962, she and
Bob Allen purchased 150 acres near LaCygne, Kansas to operate a
summer camp called Allendale by Jingo. In 1980, the Powell
family donated the Allendale facility to establish The Wildwood
Outdoor Education Center. In the summer of 1980 a traditional summer camp facility in
LaCygne was the site of an experimental program involving Kansas
City Missouri public school students. Elementary students
were engaged in hands-on learning that promoted awareness of the
natural environment and encouraged personal growth. Over
the years, Wildwood has expanded the Summer Learning program, as
it came to be known, and the Outdoor School program that it
inherited from Allendale by Jingo. Wildwood has added
additional programs to enhance students learning experiences and
maximize use of the facility, but serving urban youth still
remains central to our mission. |
