Where is the closest hospital?
The Miami County Medical Center is located in Paola, KS, and is about 25 miles from Wildwood. Wildwood Campers who need medical attention are taken there, unless a parent specifies another hospital preference. Emergency transport vehicles could be dispatched from one of the following four towns:
Drexel, MO, Louisburg, KS,
LaCygne, KS or Paola, KS.
No. During the summer, Wildwood has a Health Manager whose sole responsibility is to over see medication disbursement, treat injured or sick campers and to assist with maintaining a healthy camp. All treatment protocols are reviewed annually by a physician at LaCygne Family Care.
What do you do in case of severe weather?
We monitor the weather via the internet and local weather channels. We are on the Miami County Sheriff Department severe weather call list: they inform us if severe weather is headed toward Wildwood or if we need to take shelter. A tornado siren is located ¼ of a mile from the Wildwood gate, on 399th St. All cabins except Lakeside have built in storm shelters—campers staying in Lakeside use the Learning Center basement for shelter. We also use a Beacon Lighting Detector to monitor lighting.
Can my child bring their cell phone to camp?
We encourage campers and parents to leave all electronics at home where they are safe and secure. In case of an emergency, accident, illness or injury related to a camper the parents will be notified immediately by a Wildwood Director or the Health Manager.
Can we call to talk to our child?
Wildwood only has one phone line into the camp, so it is not feasible to let every camper receive or make calls. We encourage parents to send letters or postcards throughout their child’s stay.
How do I send mail to my child?
We encourage parents to send mail. Campers enjoy hearing from you and look forward to mail call. Be sure to put your child’s first and last name and the name of their cabin on the letter. During the Outdoor School season be sure to include your child’s school’s name on the letter.
Mail can be sent to the Wildwood address:
