Wildwood's
Outdoor School Program
“Let
Nature be Your Teacher.”
The Outdoor
School Program was started in 1963 by Marjorie Powell Allen and
Bob Allen, they dreamed of developing a program that used the
outdoors as a teacher. From 1963 to 1980, schools from the
Kansas City area sent their students, teachers and
administrators to Allendale for a memorable outdoor education
experience. In 1980 Wildwood Outdoor Education Center began
managing the program, and for over 25 years Wildwood has offered
this unique program to thousands of students from the Greater
Kansas City Area.
The Outdoor
School Program is offered in the Spring and Fall. This two,
three or five day residential program provides an unforgettable
experiential learning experience for students from the Kansas
City area. Students are joined by their teachers and parents,
who stay with them in their cabins and help lead activities.
The outdoors is the classroom, and the forest, pond and meadows
are their biological laboratory, as they learn about basic
subjects like language arts, ecology, math, geology and
history. Nature becomes their inspiration for writing essays &
poems, offers a hands-on classroom to introduce and apply
concepts from the classroom and awakens a curiosity and
appreciation for the interrelationships of the inhabitants and
their habitats supported by this beautiful, natural 150 acre
facility.
All Outdoor
Schools participate on the Adventure
Challenge Course for a day to work on team building,
problem solving, creative thinking, cooperation, conflict
resolution and learning about themselves and team-mates.
The Outdoor
School Program is the ultimate field trip. Studies have shown
that school and students who participate in an Outdoor School
program have increased scores in science, self-esteem and a
greater appreciation for learning.
The Outdoor
School Program is an
ACA Accredited program.
